About Me

Andrew Ilardi began his martial arts journey in 2005 with American Freestyle, a combination of American boxing, kickboxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and combative self-defense. This style would later become popularized as mixed martial arts (MMA). Andrew competed in kickboxing tournaments and the infamous Underground Combat League (UCL) in the Bronx, New York.

In 2013, Andrew moved to Asheville and met Sensei Thabiti Sabahive, a 5th-degree black belt in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu. In 2023, Andrew received the rank of Nidan (2nd Degree black belt) with American Judo & Jujitsu Federal and Sensei Sabahive.  He currently resides in Asheville, North Carolina, where he teaches his own unique blend of American Freestyle and Danzan Ryu Jujitsu.

The Philosophy of Asheville Jiu-jitsu

Jiu-jitsu is a martial art that teaches self-defense, physical fitness, and mental discipline. It is based on the principle of “maximum efficiency with minimum effort.” This means that jiu-jitsu practitioners use their opponents’ strength and momentum against them, rather than trying to overpower them.

Asheville Jiu-jitsu is a school that teaches jiu-jitsu in a way that is both traditional and modern. We believe that jiu-jitsu can be used to improve all aspects of one’s life, from physical fitness to mental discipline. We accept people from ALL walks of life. You are safe to train here.

Our philosophy is based on the following principles:

  • Respect: We believe that everyone deserves to be treated with respect, regardless of their size, strength, or skill level.
  • Honesty: We believe that honesty is the foundation of all relationships.
  • Discipline: We believe that discipline is essential for success in any endeavor.
  • Courage: We believe that courage is the ability to face fear and adversity.
  • Perseverance: We believe that perseverance is the ability to keep going even when things are tough.

We believe that these principles are essential for living a happy and fulfilling life. We are committed to helping our students develop these qualities through the practice of jiu-jitsu.

In addition to the principles listed above, we also believe that the practice of jiu-jitsu can help students develop the following qualities:

  • Confidence: Jiu-jitsu can help students develop confidence in their physical abilities and their ability to defend themselves.
  • Resilience: Jiu-jitsu can help students develop resilience in the face of challenges.
  • Teamwork: Jiu-jitsu is a team sport, and it can help students learn to work together effectively.
  • Leadership: Jiu-jitsu can help students develop leadership skills, as they learn to guide and motivate their teammates.

We believe that these qualities are essential for success in life, and we are committed to helping our students develop them through the practice of jiu-jitsu.
